The Arizona State Sun Devils are making headlines due to a recent rumor. Currently, they have a wide receivers coach position available.
Why are we talking about this? Because of the person who appears to be linked to this coaching position. Read below to find out who it is.
According to SunDevilSource.com, the Sun Devils are considering adding legendary NFL wide receiver Hines Ward to their coaching staff. They intend to make him the wide receivers coach for the team if they move forward. However, this would not be Ward’s first gig as a wide receivers coach.
He filled this same position for Florida Atlantic. After that, he got an opportunity to become a head coach. This was for the San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL. Now, it appears Ward may be back on the coaching market.
Ward made his mark in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He spent his entire career with the Steelers which lasted for 14 years. So, what did he do during this stretch?
Believe it or not, Ward had exactly 1,000 receptions in the NFL. This was throughout 217 games. He also had 12,083 receiving yards and 85 touchdown receptions.
What was the best part of his career? He was a member of two Super Bowl champion rosters for the Steelers. This was for Super Bowl XL and XLIII respectively.
Because of this, Ward is under consideration to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame. However, the Steelers have already given him his due in their honors. Ward is on their all-time team, their Hall of Honor, and the Pittsburgh Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Arizona State certainly has a lot of work to do. That is because the team finished just 3-9 last season. They also had a mere 2-7 record against Pac-12 opponents.
Fortunately, for the Sun Devils, they are moving to the Big 12 conference next season. It could give Arizona State the fresh start that they need.
Kenny Dillingham has been the team’s head coach since the middle of the 2022 college football season. Before that, Herman Edwards was the man in charge. That lasted from 2018 to the middle of the 2022 college football season. Now, Ward may be able to help Dillingham’s tenure last longer.
