Three free agent wide receivers the Kansas City Chiefs should target to improve their floor in 2024
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs have a great starting unit regarding their wide receiver room, which we really couldn't say last season. Yet, they still won the Super Bowl. But, things in the room still need to be addressed.

Obviously, we have no clue what's going to happen with Rashee Rice, the player who is expected to easily be WR1 on the year for the Chiefs after a stellar rookie season. And now, the Chiefs have two guys, Xavier Worthy and Hollywood Brown, who have smaller frames and may be more susceptible to injury.

The Chiefs have the financial flexibility to address the depth issue in their wide receiver room. With $15 million in cap space available, they can easily bolster the room through free agency. This could potentially raise the floor of the team, making the worst version of this position group better than it currently is.

Three wide receiver Chiefs should target

Russell Gage

Gage has been on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the last few years, and as weird as it is to say it, the Chiefs have taken former Bucs players and added them to their squad before. It seems like a common thing to do after they signed left tackle Donovan Smith and wide receiver Justin Watson.

Gage can provide great route running and get open at a better rate than the guys the Chiefs currently have down the depth chart. He had nearly 500 receiving yards last season and 700 the year before. He was drafted in 2018, so he still has a bit of juice left. The Chiefs could possibly go after him.

Zay Jones

The Chiefs have already had a visit with Jones, who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars not long ago when they drafted Brian Thomas Jr., but now, he is a guy looking for a job, and after four other visits with teams and still no contract, the Chiefs may be able to get him for cheap.

To me, Jones is a better version of Marquez Valdes-Scantling. He is a bit slower, but his hands are much better, and his contested catch radius is much better as well. The one thing with Jones is that he is almost purely an outside receiver and won't play special teams, so the versatility is not there.

DeAndre Carter

Carter played for the Las Vegas Raiders last season, and with their wide receiver room being pretty stacked, he didn't get much of an opportunity - not to mention the offense was bad, too. But Carter has speed and versatility.

What intrigues me about Carter is what he did with the Los Angeles Chargers and even on special teams for the Las Vegas Raiders. He has that special team factor that the Chiefs need, without Richie James or Mecole Hardman. And I'm willing to bet he would be super cheap.
